"Pick Me Up Off The Floor" is an experiment into poetic writing for Norah Jones. Instead of trying to write songs, she tried to write poems, then put music to them. What resulted is an album that contains some beautiful imagery depicting complex emotions (which is typical of poetry). Some of the stories are heart wrenching, like on “Were You Watching”, which is a depiction of a distracted/disconnected partner.“ Were you watching, when our love was in the deepest danger? Were you watching, as we slowly turned into strangers?” she laments. Followed by repeated cries of “Darling, where were you?” This type of emotion is so hard to convey, but Jones makes the listener feel it to their core.
