Sylvan Esso makes a point on “What Now”, and that point is to be different. It is apparent on “Radio”, where they state their thoughts on the music industry, “Can you keep them [songs] coming like a machine... Do you have the moves to make it stick, to get the clicks... Slave to the radio”.It doesn’t get much more blatant than that. Now, it is particularly easy to hear the unique and interesting instruments and melodies used throughout the album. At times, they are displacing, making the listener stop and truly listen. That is exactly the point, to draw the audience in.
